The very cool Eye-Fi wireless memory card is now available (at least to those in the US). With 2Gb of RAM for photos, and a WiFi card built in you can upload photos directly to your Mac or PC (I believe it was demoed at WWDC uploading into iPhoto directly). Or you can upload to the Eye-Fi service and into your favourite photo site (Flickr, Photobucket, Picasa, Facebook, etc.)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard’s license allows it to be virtualised, provided that

1. it is virtualised on Apple hardware,
2. sufficient licenses are purchased to cover each virtual instance

2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.

A. Mac OS X Server Software. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Mac OS X Server software (the “Mac OS X Server Software”) on a single Apple-labeled computer. You may also install and use other copies of Mac OS X Server Software on the same Apple-labeled computer, provided that you acquire an individual and valid license from Apple for each of these other copies of Mac OS X Server Software.

It seems that there’s some controversy over Greenpeace’s targeting of the bromine compounds in the iPhone. Whilst Greenpeace knows there are some compounds in there, they haven’t actually done the expensive tests to see what they actually are. However they lay the blame on Apple even though they can’t nail it down exactly, because although every electronic gadget is made pretty much the same way, spotlighting Apple will get Greenpeace more press.

Personally if I were Greenpeace I’d hire an engineer to build a ‘concept’ green PC. Then at least you’d know it could be done with available parts. If they couldn’t build it, it probably indicates that they need to pressure parts suppliers to conform to greener standards.

So, how am I preparing for the transition on my server box?

• Make sure I’ve got my order for a copy of Leopard in
• Backup everything
• Try to see if I can get fink working on Leopard (dev box) before I do the install
• Check to see if postfix, clamav, amavisd, mysql, php, gallery2 and wordpress are all going to be happy under Leopard. Not to mention Retrospect and SuperDuper.
• Wait for 10.5.1
• Bite the bullet and do the install

Here’s a reasonably complete guide to filenames that Windows doesn’t like. I managed to create a file on an SMB share that ended with a space, which in the Windows world makes it a PITA to delete (as in you can copy the file onto the SMB share from your Mac, but then you can’t delete it again). I’m told one solution is to get the ’short’ filename using “dir /x” under Windows and then delete the short file name…

The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the API that the shell UI cannot handle.
