Apple Software updates can stop your Mac from booting.

Unsanity reports that there’s a reproducible bug in Apple’s software update installer’s “update prebinding” phase that can render your Mac unbootable. They suggest leaving your Mac alone (and not launching any applications) during the “Optimising system performance” phase of the installer. Via Macintouch
