Obfuscating PHP code

I paid for some commercial PHP code that’s licensed on a per-site basis (yes, it was cheaper than writing and debugging it myself). Amusingly the code is obfuscated. Looking in the file reveals

eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....

Which I’m guessing wouldn’t really be that hard to decode.

Update – Having looked at the uncompressed base64_decoded code, it seems that this is a good way to wrap PHP code containing UTF-16 or high-ASCII characters so that it survives various editors etc.
